Abstract

The Judith Carol Carlson Oral History Interview with Robert C. Ingalls was conducted as part of the research for Carlson's MA thesis, Corvallis and Salem, Oregon Newspapers in Transition. Carlson earned an MA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Oregon State University in 1978. Ingalls was owner and publisher of the Corvallis Gazette-Times. The transcribed audio of this interview is available online.

Scope and Content Notes

The Judith Carol Carlson Oral History Interview with Robert C. Ingalls consists of two audiocassette tape recordings of an interview with Ingalls on June 17, 1977. These cassette tapes have been digitized to *.wav and *.mp3 formats, which are available to patrons upon request. The collection was transcribed by the Special Collections and Archives Research Center, and the full text, with audio, is available online.

The interview was conducted by Carlson as part of the research for her graduate thesis, Corvallis and Salem, Oregon Newspapers in Transition, which describes the history of the Gazette-Times as family-owned paper and the implications of its purchase by a newspaper chain in 1969. The thesis was largely based on interviews with key newspaper staff members, including Ingalls, and community members.

In the interview, Ingalls discusses his father and family; newspapers in Oregon; family-run newspapers and the purchase of family-owned newspapers by newspaper chains; higher education in Oregon and Ingalls' role on the State Board of Higher Education; and the Corvallis community.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Oregon State alumnus Robert C. Ingalls was owner and publisher of the Corvallis Gazette-Times, state legislator, and member and president of the Oregon State Board of Higher Education. Ingalls was born in Corvallis, Oregon, on February 19, 1916; graduated from Corvallis High School; and attended Oregon State College until 1937 when he joined his family's Corvallis newspaper, the Gazette-Times. After military service during World War II, he served as business manager and editorial page editor. Ingalls succeeded his father as editor and publisher in 1950. The paper was sold in 1969 to Lee Enterprises; however, Ingalls continued as editor and publisher until 1973, when another editor was appointed. Ingalls continued as publisher until his retirement in 1982. Ingalls served as state representative from Corvallis in 1969-1975; in the 1980s, he served two terms on the Oregon State Board of Higher Education, the last two years as president.

Judith Carol Carlson earned an MA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Oregon State University in 1978.
