From 1909 to 1929, the Oregon State Board of Higher Curricula was the governing body for the Oregon University system. In 1929, Oregon passed a law that unified the state's public universities under the newly created Department of Higher Education. At this time, the board officially changed their name to the Oregon State Board of Higher Education. This board would govern the Oregon University system until 2015.
In 2011, the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission was formed, and in 2013, the Commission expanded with individual boards for the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and Portland State University. Just a few years later, on June 30, 2015, both the Oregon State Board of Higher Education and the Oregon University System closed and the newer Commission took over the work.
