Scope and Content Note
The Student Media Records document the oversight, advising, and management provided for student publications and broadcast media at Oregon State University. The records include budgets and financial information, contracts correspondence, handbooks, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, photographs, printing blocks, reports, and student papers. About a third of the collection consists of records of the Broadcast Media Committee, the Student Publications Committee, and the University Student Media Committee. Materials pertaining to production (typesetting, advertising, and newswire services) for the campus newspaper and yearbook are included in the collection. The participation of Student Media directors, Irwin Harris and Frank Ragulsky, in the Pacific Coast Publication Managers and the Western Association of University Publication Managers professional organizations are reflected in the records.
The photographs consist primarily of 35 mm b/w negatives as well as several b/w prints. They depict Oregon State University President A.L. Strand at various functions, Richard Mengler, old farm structures, and a birthday party for an unidentified child. Six printing blocks are part of the collection; these include the cover image of the 1949/1950 student handbook.
An addition to the Student Media Records (Accession 2010:071) consists of materials generated by the Office of Student Media and includes alumni lists, budgetary information, certificates, correspondence, manuals, meeting minutes, a photograph, and end-of-term reports. Over half of this transfer is made up of records from the University Student Media Committee while two of the manuals were prepared for use by Journalism Department staff. The certificates document honors and awards given to the "The Beaver Yearbook" by National Scholastic Press Association, National School Yearbook Association, and other organizations. One of the certificates is a charter document establishing the Portland professional chapter of the Sigma Delta Chi Honorary Society. The photograph depicts an unidentified student holding a copy of the "Daily Barometer" newspaper in front of the Memorial Union in 1972.
A second addition to the Student Media Records (Accession 2012:067) consists of photographs and a notebook compiled by members of the Theta Phi Sigma Women's Journalism Honorary Society documenting the process of producing the Student Directory (also known as the Fusser's Guide). In addition to a handwritten draft of the student directory with a rough layout for ads, the notebook also contains newspaper clippings, stylesheets, and reports outlining all the tasks necessary for the final print production. The report entries are written in a narrative style and dated. The two photographic prints are images used on the covers of the 1983/84 and 1984/85 student directories.
