Interview with Joseph Koepfli. April 14, 1992. Interview by Thomas Hager for use in "Force of Nature: The Life of Linus Pauling,"
(Simon & Schuster, 1995).
Joseph Koepfli: It's been told many times but allegedly at the end of the war, the Japanese had been
interned and all that, and Linus hired a young Japanese to - for a houseman and part-time
gardener in Sierra Madre where he lived. And they painted his mailbox red, the neighbors
did. And that made Linus pretty angry, I'm sure.
