  Dear Ubbelohde:

  I am writing to thank you for your interesting book Melting and Crystal Structure, which you sent to me.

  It arrived at a good time, when my associate Dr. G. Albrecht and I had begun the consideration of the melting points of methane and certain other substances. We don't know yet whether we shall be able to answer the question that interests us, but I am sure that the discussions in your book will be helpful.

  I may mention that I was disappointed in one respect. I had expected to find in the chapter on solid-solid transformations related to fusion (Chapter 4) some evaluation of my 1930 paper and some account of the historical development of ideas about these transformations.

  You may be interested in one historical episode, which, however, no longer has any real significance. I had accepted an invitation to speak in Switzerland in September 1939, with my subject the mechanism of orientational transitions in solids. However, as the summer of 1939 approached I decided that the sensible thing to do was to stay in the United States, and I have never published the paper on that subject that I was going to present. Moreover, I have, I believe, lost the manuscript.

  Under separate cover I am sending you some reprints on my recent work.
