  Dear Dr. Fishman:

  I have run across your letter of 17 May, with no notice on it that I have answered it. I judge that I did not, and I apologize to you for the delay.

  I am interested to learn about your interest in a review article on water. I have been working, off and on, on the structure of water for a number of years, and I am still devoting some time to it. However, I am not yet ready to prepare an article that I would consider satisfactory on this subject.

  Accordingly, I feel that I cannot accept your invitation.

  I may tell you that, together with my colleagues Drs. Catchpool, Cherkin and Albrecht, I am continuing work on the theory of anesthesia, with special reference to the role played by water in this theory (I enclose a reprint of my 1961 paper). My colleagues and I think that our new paper on this subject, including a comparison of anesthetic activity of many substances with the properties of their aqueous solutions and of other systems, will be ready sometime during the coming year. We had not decided where this paper should be published. Do you think that you might be interested in having it for Physiological Review?
