    5 February 1957

    Mr. Peter Pauling

Flat 24, Whitehall Lodge Pages Lane,

Maswell Hill London N. 10, England

    Dear Peter:

I am glad to learn about your new flat. I hope that it turns out to be thoroughly satisfactory.

I have continued to work on the water problem, and I hope that I can settle down this afternoon to writing a preliminary draft of the paper - I think that almost everything that can be done effectively at the present time on the problem has been done. I have formulated another face-centered close-packed structure of dodecahedra with density 1.00, and with a number of contacts at 3.6 Å. It involves some deformation of the dodecahedra, probably not un-reasonably large. I shall send you a copy of the rough draft of the paper when it is ready, in order that you may send comments and advice.

I should like to have you buy a microscope for me, of the sort discussed in your letter. I have thought for some time that I should have a microscope of my own, for use in some phases of my work, later on, and I am willing to have you get one now, and to use it during the remainder of your stay in England. I enclose my check for $300. Please let me know the exact cost of the microscope, after you have bought it.

Mama and I spent four days at Deer Flat Ranch a couple of weeks ago. We are planning to go up again in another week and to stay for about ten days.

    Love from

    [Linus Pauling]
