  • Letter from Dr. E. Bright Wilson to Dr. Martin Karplus, RE: Material from LP was held at Harvard for Wilson so he is unable to comment on it now. Will write to McGraw-Hill and request their views on the length, amount per page, etc. Increased length would not matter, but would not like to see the price increase. Certain parts of the book should be changed completely, including Chapter 2, perturb theory, and radiation. Suggests changing the examples for classical mechanics. May need something to underpin the wave equation. Must have matrices and operators early in the book. Perturbation theory is much simpler in terms of the energy matrix. Hopes that the revised edition will give the student a broader coverage of the fundamentals without sacrificing the approach suitable for beginners. When Wilson returns, he will write to both LP and Karplus on his reactions to LP's comments. Wonders if Karplus is in the army yet. [Letters from LP to Karplus July 26, 1955, September 22, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (Kamb - Kendrew)), #197.6]
  • Letter from Dr. Masao Kotani, Physics Dept., University of Tokyo, to LP RE: Enjoyed LP and AHP's visit last March. Kotani and his colleagues are interested in the study of complex salts, particularly in the theory of their electronic structure. In connection with this research, requests reprints of two specific papers by LP and any other related papers. Looks forward to seeing LP in Pasadena in early December. • Research Notebook of LP RE: Answers to certain problems in chapters 29-32 of the chemistry textbook, Col. Ch. p. 37. [Filed under LP Research Notebooks: 35Rb]
