  • Letter from Dr. Chia-Si Lu, Department of Chemistry, UC Berkeley, to LP RE: Discusses his difficulties with Selective Service deferment as the Pasadena Local Board has not approved his deferral despite the fact that he is working on a defense related project with Pitzer at Berkeley. Describes the situation in detail and asks LP for suggestions and assistance. Briefly discusses his API research project. Adds that if his service is not deferred, he will either have to join the U.S. armed services or the Chinese Expeditionary Force in India. Mentions that Lippscomb [sic] informed him that Dr. Dickinson has undergone a successful operation for his cancer.
