Dear Dr. Weaver:
I am enclosing my report on the work of Dr. Dorothy Wrinch, resulting from her visit to Ithaca on January 26th and 27th, 1938. You will see that my impression of her and her work is in general an unfavorable one. I believe, however, that my conclusions are justified. I am sympathetic to the application of physical and mathematical methods to chemical and biological problems, and I began the interview with Dr. Wrinch with the hope that the unsatisfactory aspects of her published work would be removed in the discussion. I found, however, that her methods and results are still less scientific than they had appeared to be from her papers.
I doubt that her attack on the problem of protein structure will lead directly to any valuable results, and I think that it would not be worth while to have her working in our laboratories in Pasadena.
In this report I have written my opinion without reserve. I would not write so freely for publication, of course.
