Arthur Solomon King Photographs, 1967

Scope and Content Note

About one-third of the photographs held in this collection are of soil core samples extracted from various locations around Oregon and Washington, including Astoria, Athena, Chehalis and Walla Walla. Also depicted are soil extraction tools and a soil pH test kit used by OSC staff.

The remainder of the photos document scenes from the 1967 forage tour. Art King, Lynn Cannon and Murray Dawson are identified as among the participants travelling on the tour. Sam Dement is also identified as "explaining his fertilizer program" to area farmers.

Several images of a Future Farmers of America soil judging demonstration are likewise part of the collection. Another image is annotated as follows: "Marion County Extension Agent and Art King show why this field needs 100 lbs. P2O5, 60-80 lbs. K2O, two tons of lime and some magnesium. This was one of the fields mass sampled in 'Operation Snowstorm.'"
