Multnomah County Extension Home Economics Units Collection, 1930-1985

Scope and Content Note

The collection's scrapbooks includes brochures, certificates, correspondence, fabric samples, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, photographs and publications. In addition to documentation of unit membership, group activities, and various cooking, sewing, and craft projects administered by the units, the scrapbooks contain original artistic renderings as well as images of household life clipped from magazine ads and articles.

Also included in this collection are record books from the Powellhurst unit consisting of reports to the County Extension Agent on unit meetings and projects.

Depicted in certain of the images are Home Economic unit members (some of whom are identified) at various workshops, picnics and parties, officer installations, and project exhibits.

Among the subjects covered in the workshops are metric system conversion, food preservation, automotive maintenance, pants fitting and alteration, upholstery, and the at-home development of cleaning supplies. Also included is a historical essay on Extension Home Economics units in Multnomah County which traces the origins and activities of some of the 38 units that have been established since 1925.
