Bureau of Land Management Maps of Oregon, 1944-1993

The Bureau of Land Management Maps of Oregon consist of maps published by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for the public as guides for outdoor recreation and maps prepared by the BLM for management of forest lands, primarily in western Oregon. The Bureau of Land Management was formed in 1946 by the merger of the General Land Office and the United States Grazing Service. BLM lands in Oregon are primarily forest lands in western Oregon and grazing and range lands in eastern Oregon.

The William L. Finley Papers document the wildlife conservation work of Finley and his wife Irene, and the photography work of Herman T. Bohlman, who worked with Finley in the first decade of the 20th century. Finley was a photographer, filmmaker, and author who wrote and lectured extensively on wildlife conservation issues. The collection includes published and unpublished manuscripts, lecture and field notes, reports, correspondence, photographs and motion picture films.

Forest Type Maps of Oregon, 1900 - circa 1995

The Forest Type Maps of Oregon document forest composition at the county, region, and statewide level in Oregon from 1900 to the mid-1950s. The maps were prepared by the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Geological Survey. The earliest maps (1900-1901) were published in color. The maps depict the type and quality of timber in a given area as well as non-forested and de-forested land.

The General County Highway Maps consist of highway maps of several Oregon counties prepared by the Oregon State Highway Department in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads. The maps also include detailed maps of key areas within the counties, such as towns and junctions. The maps provide information on roads, streams, buildings, cities, county population, local landmarks and other key features. The collection includes maps for Clatsop, Columbia, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Harney, Lane, Lincoln, Polk, Tillamook, and Yamhill Counties.

The Royal G. Jackson Papers consist of materials created or assembled by Jackson in the course of his research. The bulk of the materials pertain to the history of the Oregon State University College of Forestry, McDonald – Dunn Research forest, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Arboretum, and nature-based tourism in central Oregon and Costa Rica. The papers include extensive oral history sound recordings and photographs, in addition to manuscripts, publications and reference materials. Lemon graduated in 1911 and was a faculty member and administrator at Oregon State from 1911 until his retirement in 1959.

National Forests in Oregon Maps, 1910-1989

The National Forests in Oregon Maps consists of maps of all the national forests in Oregon prepared by the U.S. Forest Service. The collection includes maps of the entire forests, ranger districts, and wilderness areas. The maps depict key landscape features, forest roads, campsites, ranger stations and lookouts, recreational sites, and main roads near each forest. Forest reserves were established in Oregon in the early 1890s; many of these reserves became National Forests in the early 1900s after the establishment of the U.S. Forest Service.

Spotted Owl Management, Policy, and Research Collection, 1969-1993

The Spotted Owl Management, Policy, and Research Collection consists of documents assembled by E. Charles Meslow pertaining to the northern spotted owl controversy in the Pacific Northwest during the 1980s and early 1990s. The documents include published and unpublished materials such as scientific reports, correspondence, management plans and proposals, environmental impact statements, news articles, and documents submitted in litigation. Meslow conducted research on the northern spotted owl with the Oregon Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit at Oregon State University and served on the Interagency Scientific Committee established in 1988 to address conservation of the northern spotted owl.

Eugene Starr Papers

Eugene Starr Papers, 1911-1988

Eugene Starr (1901-1988) enjoyed a widespread reputation as a distinguished scientist and engineer. A 1923 graduate of Oregon Agricultural College, he achieved international recognition for his work in the fields of electrical engineering and nuclear physics. In 1958 Starr was awarded the Department of the Interior's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, for his work with the Bonneville Power Administration. Starr's papers include personal correspondence and scientific reports, with a focus on his work in nuclear fission and the transmission of high-voltage electricity.

He held positions at Harvard University, Rutgers University, and the University of Montana until 1985 when he joined the National Council of the Paper Industry for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI).

The Willamette Valley Sketch Map depicts purchases and reservations made by the Board of Commissioners with Native Americans in Oregon. The map was prepared by George Gibbs and Edmond A. Starling. Gibbs was a geologist and ethnologist who participated in treaty negotiations between the U.S. Government and native tribes. This collection consists of three reproductions of the original map, which is held in the National Archives.
