Macpherson Family History, 2010

This family history consists of the monograph, The Macpherson Family Through Four Generations, written by Hector Macpherson, Jr. Macpherson graduated from Oregon State College in 1940 and, as an Oregon State Senator, was instrumental in development of Oregon's land use planning system with passage of Senate Bill 100 in 1973.

Bernard Malamud Papers

Bernard Malamud Papers, 1949-2007

Bernard Malamud (1914-1986), a major American novelist and short story writer, taught at Oregon State University from 1949-1961. A prolific author, he received a Pulitzer Prize (The Fixer, 1966) and two National Book Awards (The Magic Barrel, 1959; The Fixer, 1966) for his work. The Malamud Papers include an assortment of personal correspondence relating to Malamud's tenure as professor and writer at Oregon State University. In addition, the collection features several boxes of newspaper clippings, as well as signed first editions and published translations of his books.

Fritz Marti Papers

Fritz Marti Papers, 1909-2009

Fritz Marti (1894-1991), was a Swiss-born philosophy professor highly regarded as an expert on post-Kantian idealism. His papers contain a significant trove of correspondence, including letters with such figures as Jacques Barzun, Walter Lippman and John F. Kennedy. The archive likewise features a wide swath of biographical items, research notebooks and unpublished manuscripts. One particular highlight of the collection is an annotated manuscript of Marti's unpublished translation of F. W. J. Schelling's The Method of University Studies.

The Mathematics Department Records document the teaching and research activities of the department and the involvement of Department Chair, W.E. Milne, in campus organizations. Mathematics courses have been taught at Oregon State since its founding in 1868; however, research and graduate instruction in mathematics began in 1932 with establishment of the School of Science, which included the Mathematics Department.

Christopher Mathews Papers, 1962-2010

Chris Mathews (b. 1937) is a distinguished biochemist with contributions to enzymology and virology. Through professorships at Yale University, the University of Arizona, and Oregon State University, he has received significant recognition as a researcher, administrator, and educator. As the author of four books and nearly 150 research articles, director of 35 Ph.D. theses, and recipient of several major awards in the field of biochemistry, Mathews is a valued member of the international scientific community. Mathews' papers include professional correspondence from 1962-2010 regarding research, publications, and professorial duties, and include institutional records of historical interest from his long-term tenure as chairman of the OSU Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

The Harvey L. McAlister played on the first OAC football team in 1893 and graduated with a degree in agriculture in 1897. He was a farmer in Lexington, Oregon, until he retired in 1947.

McDonald Rare Book and Manuscript Collection

McDonald Rare Book and Manuscript Collection, 2041-1763 BC, ca. 960-1941 AD

In the early 1930s, Mary McDonald (1848-1935), concerned with the preponderance of scientific and technical books at most land grant universities, donated a rare book collection to the Oregon State University library. In 1934 the McDonald Rare Book Room was established with gifts to the library of items from her collection. Since then, the McDonald endowment has enabled the acquisition of thousands of rare books and fine bindings. Included in the collection are numerous incunabula (books printed before 1501). Among the exceedingly rare items housed in the McDonald Collection are three cuneiform tablets, the oldest of which dates to 2041 BCE.

The Oral Histories of the Oregon State University Microbiology Department recount the department's history through the perspective of Walter Bollen and Mabel Pernot. Bollen earned two degrees from Oregon Agricultural College prior to his beginning a career on the OSU microbiology faculty that spanned nearly sixty years. Pernot was the daughter of Emile F. Pernot - the father of the university's microbiology program - and the granddaughter of George Coote, an early campus horticulturist. The Pernot interviews discuss, at length, both the history of the department as well as the story of the Pernot and Coote families.

The collection is particularly strong in its documentation of the emergence of television as a tool for statewide education, a development that came about after much debate in the mid-1950s. An Oregon Agricultural College graduate, Morris was on the staff of KOAC from 1932-1963 and is the author of a history of the station, The Remembered Years..., published in 1972.
