Benjamin D. Boswell was the first professor of military science at the Corvallis State Agricultural College and the first active-duty Army officer to be assigned military instructor at a college in the far western states. He was born in Indiana on 10 Sept 1837 and served during the Civil War and afterwards in the Regular Army. He came to Corvallis in 1873 and served as professor until 1876. He was proprietor of the Boswell Springs resort (Douglas County) for 12-14 years prior to his death in 1907.
